Nothing will ever again be black-and-white.” – Mark Jenkins - Upon rising, we made our way to the boardwalk of the base to grab some much needed coffee and croissants. As we prepared the list of provisioning items, Alex from The Moorings arranged a taxi cab driver to make the trip to the major supermarket as painless as possible. Just down the road from the base, we headed into the local shopping center where we easily found all the food, beverages, souvenirs, and products we needed. From fresh produce and meats, to paper towels, and fishing hooks, we ended up filling seven grocery carts with all the necessities for our trip. The shopping center also offers several clothing stores, souvenir shops, and a few cafes. . After returning to the boat to unload, Alex popped in to review the boat functions, navigation desk, and plotters, and answer our additional questions. Following, we headed to the much anticipated chart briefing with Alex and Lene to discuss our itinerary and the ‘must sees’ on the sail south. After a long day of prep work, we headed to a local restaurant near the dock for a delicious Roti. A local Caribbean favorite, Rotis are garbanzo bean tortillas filled with potatoes, curried chicken, and veggies. A perfect end to a long day, we were happily exhausted and excitedly awaiting our first sail… . The First Sail: . The sunrise began to kiss the sky as our entire crew leaped from bed to prepare for the short reach to anchor in between the striking peaks of the Pitons. Eager to raise the Mainsheet for the first time, the Icelantic crew graciously said our goodbyes to The Moorings’ amazing staff and headed to explore the town of Soufriere, and the peaks, Gros Piton and the Petit. The quick sail, about one hour, down the leeward side of St. Lucia, provided us a nice reminder of the synergy felt every time we find ourselves on the side of the mountain or on the seas. After we securely anchored in the bay, a group dinghied to town to check out the local jewelry and historic church, while another went to explore the peaks. Of the two, Gros Piton is the more established. There, travelers can find a Welcome center, tours, transportation, and local guides. The two hour hike is a little challenging, but is well worth the attempt. From the summit, there are gorgeous views of the island and the Petit. . With the first sail and island adventure under our belts, we made our way back to the Life Jacket to enjoy a vibrant sunset, cocktails, and a delicious home cooked meal. Words By: Alexandria Prain
